PHIL - 420. American Philosophy

This course will introduce students to the diverse intellectual traditions that have contributed to the development of American philosophy over the past three centuries, including influences that have been somewhat neglected: the American Indian thought of Parker and Zitkala-Sa; the Puritan theology of Jonathan Edwards; the political theory of Paine and Jefferson; the African- American philosophy of DuBois and Locke; the transcendentalism of Emerson and Thoreau; the “classical” pragmatism of Peirce and James; the “radical” pragmatism of Dewey and Addams. Special attention will be given to American conceptions of justice, freedom, democracy, religiosity, nature, pragmatism, progress, and self-reliance.

Prerequisite(s): PHIL 101 or PHIL 103 or PHIL 105.
