CRJS - 315. Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG) Practicum 1-3 credit(s) The technique of Genetic Genealogy began in the early 2000s with the advent of advanced DNA testing. Now widely accepted, Genetic Genealogy is used to answer questions of human identity for both law enforcement and the community. The second in a series, this course builds on foundational Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy concepts and allows the student to test their knowledge, skills, and abilities by working on an actual case. The course can be taken for 1, 2 or 3 credits depending on the research hours offered, i.e., if a 1-credit course is offered then the student will contribute 4 research hours per week; for a 2-credit course, 8 hours are contributed, etc. The course may be repeated for additional credits at the discretion of the instructor based on the availability of casework and other factors. The course requires two subscriptions with monthly fees: an Ancestry.com student account which costs $4.99/month and a background check database subscription which costs $20/month so students should consider these additional costs before enrolling. This course may be repeated once for credit.
