CIP Code: 27.0304
HEGIS Code: 1703
The Applied Mathematics program focuses on the use of mathematics in quantitative fields of study, such as biology, economics, engineering, and physics. This program provides fundamental training in the mathematical study of real-world problems, solution techniques, and the interpretation of results.
Students are required to complete one of three tracks: the classical applied track, the modeling, and analytics in the natural sciences track, or the statistics track. Each track is designed to prepare students for work in a variety of potential careers in mathematics, the sciences, and industry, among other quantitative professions.
The classical applied track focuses on classical applications of mathematics in the natural and physical sciences. This track is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematics and its applications. Completion of this track will prepare for careers in industry and graduate-level programs in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics, and more.
The mathematical modeling and analytics in the natural sciences track focus on concepts used in data analysis, computation, and the mathematical abstraction of real-world systems (model building). The track is designed to prepare students to use mathematics in science to solve real-world situations. Students that complete this track will have opportunities in fields that include epidemiology, biology, computer science, in addition to graduate programs that include data science, public health, and applied mathematics.
The statistics track focuses on developing statistical tools used to collect, analyze, and interpret empirical data. Students pursuing the statistics track will be prepared for careers in virtually all fields that generate data, and graduate-level programs in statistics.
