The First Year at Siena Seminar (FYSM 100 and FYSM 101 ) is a two-semester, writing-intensive course taken sequentially by all first year students and students transferring into Siena with less than 24 credits earned while matriculated at another college or university. The goal of the course is to prepare our students for the intellectual demands of college: how to read carefully and engage with a text, how to think critically and stake informed positions, how to write clearly and persuasively, and how to effectively and enthusiastically participate in classroom conversations. The First Year at Siena Seminar will teach our students how to be students and active learners and will do this in a way that introduces them to the story that is unique to Siena University and our Franciscan heritage. This required course is academically rigorous and is a symbol of true academic excellence.
First Year at Siena Seminar 24+ Transfer (FYSM 200 ) is a one-semester, writing intensive course taken by all students transferring into Siena with 24 or more credits earned while matriculated at another college or university. The goals of the course are to introduce transfer students to the story that is unique to Siena University and our Franciscan heritage and to reinforce critical thinking, reading, and communication skills vital to life-long learning. This required course is academically rigorous and is a symbol of true academic excellence.
