Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC)

The purpose of the courses offered by the Military Science and Leadership Department is to train quality college students to become the future leaders of the United States Army and the civilian community. The course of study is divided into two parts-the first two years (Basic Course) and the last two years (Advanced Course).  ROTC is open to all eligible students and through the first two years of participation there is little to no obligation for enrollment.  ROTC encourages students to join and try out the program with the ability to leave at any time.

Basic Course:  Open to any / all eligible students. Students incur no military obligation while enrolled in the Basic Course and may withdraw from the course at their option.  Student in the basic course have the option to just take the Military Science class; learning about leadership, teamwork, and problem though the lens of Selection for the United States Army and greater Military.  Those student wishing to complete ROTC and commission as officers in the Active, Guard, or Reserve Army will also take the lab portion which include physical readiness training (PRT) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Mornings, as well as military and tactics training on select Thursday afternoons.

Advanced Course:  The advance course or MS III & MS IV courses are designed for students intending to commission as Army Officers  These courses are open only to student who complete the basic courses, or have prior military experience. Students selected for the Advanced Course participate on a contractual basis and receive $420 stipend per school month from the government once contracted. Emphasis of the Advanced Course is on applied, individual leadership development, and exposure of the student to military management systems and techniques.

Scholarship Opportunities:

Army ROTC scholarships help students pay their tuition and other expenses while training to become an Officer. Army ROTC scholarships are valuable in many ways:

  • Two, three, and four-year scholarship options based on the time remaining to complete your degree.
  • Scholarship amounts will vary depending on the school and will pay either full tuition & fees or room & board.
  • Additional $1200/yr. stipend for books.
  • Recipients may use their scholarships at any college that offers Army ROTC on their campus.

ROTC scholarships are very competitive. To be competitive, one must:

  • 2.5+ cumulative GPA.
  • Be physically fit; have played sports in high school or college, etc., and be able to pass the Army Combat Fitness Test.
  • Have been a leader of a club, sports team, extra-curricular activity, etc., or showed leadership ability; Be of good moral character.

Students not desiring an Army commission may still enroll and complete any basic military science course for elective credit. Such participation does not incur any contractual obligations.

A student may satisfy the requirements for application to the Advanced Course in pursuit of a commission in one of three ways:

1. Completion of the first two years (Basic Course) allows a student to earn four academic credits towards graduation while qualifying for the Advanced Course. The student is expected to attend one hour of classroom instruction during the Basic Course.

2. Students may also qualify for entrance into the Advanced Course by selection to the four-week Leadership Training Course (LTC) held the summer between their sophomore and junior year at Fort Knox, KY. Qualified students may compete for two-year scholarships while attending the summer Leadership Training Course. Students may elect to enter the Advanced Course upon successful completion of LTC. All expenses to attend the course are fully funded by the military. Attendance at the summer Basic Camp does not obligate the student to enroll in ROTC unless they are awarded and accept a scholarship.

3. Students with Junior ROTC, Senior ROTC, service academy experience, or prior military service may also qualify to enter the Advanced Course.

Commissioning Opportunities and Requirement:

The ROTC program may be pursued in conjunction with any academic major offered at Siena. Completion of the Advanced Course qualifies graduates to receive an officer’s commission concurrent with the baccalaureate degree and does not necessarily interfere with subsequent graduate or professional studies.

During the senior year, the student has the option of applying for one of two types of commissions. The first type, a Reserve Forces Duty commission as a citizen Soldier with the Reserve Forces, is for graduates wishing to serve in the US Army Reserve or US Army National Guard, while pursuing a civilian occupation. The second option enables graduates to go on active duty, as a Second Lieutenant in their assigned military specialty.

Military Leadership Laboratories:

Laboratories offered by the Department of Military Science and Leadership focus on the application of leadership methods and techniques that are taught in the classroom. We conduct five mandatory Company Labs a semester (typically on Thursdays from 1400 until 1700), as well as two offsite Super Labs a semester.  Super labs combine all Colleges and Universities in the Capital District and occur at the Glenmore Road National Guard Armor on two Saturdays a semester (typically from 0800 until 1600) . Laboratories also stress adventure and outdoor activity as a means to build personal confidence. This is an optional activity for students who are not pursuing a commission. Labs are mandatory for students in the Advanced Course and for those who are receiving scholarship benefits.

Advanced Camp:

All students accepted into the Advanced Course must attend Advanced Camp during the summer after their junior year. The purpose of Advanced Camp is to evaluate the leadership potential of officer candidates who wish to pursue a commission in the United States Army. This four-week course builds upon the skills and methods taught in the junior year.

Summer Opportunities:

Open to all contracted cadets starting as early as the summer after their freshmen year.

Internships: Through partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organization Cadets are eligible to participate in fully funded internships with the NSA, CIA, defense agencies, nursing and medical organization and hospitals, homeland & cyber security agencies, engineering organizations, and a host of other programs.  Additionally, there are several internships focused on foreign language and leadership programs, both in the United States and abroad.

Military Training:  Cadets are also able to patriciate in U.S. Army Schools such as Airborne, Air Assault, the Army Combat Diver Qualification Course, Army Space Cadre Badge Course, Repel Master Course, Northern Warfare, Mountain Warfare, and Jungle Warfare. There are further opportunities for cadets to be assigned to an active duty military unit where they are afforded the chance to shadow junior officers and leaders for three weeks.
