CRJS - 310. Quan Methods in Criminal Justice

Uniquely rooted in the philosophy of science and ethics of criminal justice research, this course introduces tools of quantitative reasoning for conducting criminal justice research. The course provides an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics, fundamental techniques and processes of criminal justice research, methods of data collection and data analysis, including hypothesis formation, measurement, questionnaire construction, sampling, literature review, academic citations, and quantitative data analysis using SPSS or STATA. By the end of this course, students will be expected to complete a scientific research project based on the analysis of a real dataset. Methodological design, operationalization, and data analysis are integral parts of this course. Students will leave this course with a firm understanding of different research designs in criminal justice and criminological research.
