SOCI - 363. Sociology of the Body

This course will focus on the sociological implications of embodiment, or how human bodies are organized and socialized in society and social institutions, from a historical perspective. Institutions organize the production and development of how bodies are perceived, structured, decorated, and how behaviors are socially constructed. Topics will include institutionalization of birth and death, gender, sexuality, disability, race, fashion, body modification, and bodies in institutions such as education, medical, military, family, media, and employment.

Prerequisite(s): (SOCI 101  or SOCI 120  or SOCI 130  or SOCI 190 )
