APHY - 300. Manufacturing ProcessesLab 1 credit(s) The engineering design of a product should be informed by the manufacturing processes that will be used to produce it. This course introduces the student engineer to the most important techniques used in manufacturing, and discusses how the strengths and limitations of each technique are reflected in a good design. Some of the topics covered in this course include manual and Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machining, welding, plasma cutting, quality control, and shop safety. Each process is covered from a technical perspective, using industry-standard language so that students will be able to communicate effectively with professional engineers and technologists. In addition, an emphasis is placed on understanding engineering materials and processing parameters that influence design considerations, product quality, and production costs. Ultimately, students will gain the technical and practical knowledge needed to select, design, and execute manufacturing processes, as well as the inspection and testing needed for quality assurance.
