SPAN - 027. Women’s Voices from Latin America

3 credit(s)
This course provides an overview of women’s writing and cultural expression from Latin America and considers how their texts and varied forms of cultural expression intersect, reflect, disrupt or resist canonical literary movements in Latin America. The content includes traditional narrative forms as well as non-literary, cultural and visual forms of expression: music, short stories, novels, poetry, theatre, song lyrics, film, art, testimonial literature, etc. Students will study literature and other cultural forms of expression by Latin American women beginning with 17th century nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, considered possibly the first Latin American feminist, who pointedly questioned the male-dominated society of her  time and strove for women’s intellectual freedom. In addition, the texts and different forms of cultural expression will be analyzed/studied from different contexts; any necessary historical and contextual background of the women and their countries will be woven in the course material.
