HLTH - 100. Introduction to Public Health

An introduction to the field of public health. Public health professionals work at the population and the systems level to prevent disease, prolong life, and promote health. Students will learn the history and core functions of public health in the United States. Topics covered in this course include measuring population health, healthcare systems, public health infrastructure, public health interventions, and emergency preparedness. Public health in the United States has a strong social justice orientation. Students will learn about determinants of health (e.g., physical, mental, and social) that allow populations to maintain health or experience disease.
