CRJS - 285. Art as Expression of the Carceral State
3 credit(s) In this highly experiential course, students will “listen” to the voices of and gain empathy for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists, experiencing their artwork through observation, analysis and hands-on activities. This includes art-making – employing the techniques and materials used by the artists themselves. Students will learn the history of mass incarceration through the lens of art created by artists throughout history and artists working while incarcerated. Through this hands-on experience, students will develop an understanding of the general and disparate impacts mass incarceration has had on individuals and communities. Students will propose and implement strategies for ameliorating or dismantling some aspect(s) of the criminal justice system that the artists seek to address. May be repeated once for credit.
