NURS - 315. Holistic Pharmacology 3 credit(s) This course provides a holistic perspective on the essential principles of herbal pharmacology and will prepare the nurse to provide evidence-based patient education within their scope of practice. Emphasis is placed on understanding plant properties, chemical constituents, pharmacologic actions, dosage, contraindications, and adverse reactions of select herbal medicines. Clinical applications, patient safety, regulatory status and evidence informed practice are integrated throughout the course. Herbal pharmacological concepts are examined through a lens of empirical research, western herbalism and various cultural traditions to provide a strong foundation for the nurse to understand how medicinal plants are used for self-care.
