The mission of the Creative Arts Department is to engage students with works of the creative imagination. The creative arts curriculum empowers students:

  • To understand the creative process and be able to internalize this process for self-assessment and creative growth.
  • To understand the fundamental elements of the arts.
  • To demonstrate technical excellence in the skills, tools, materials, and/or software used in their medium(s) of choice, and to apply those skills in practica, internships, independent studies and/or capstones
  • To gain knowledge of historical and contemporary art movements, trends, and genres, and to identify artists relevant to their own process of art-making.
  • To gain the ability to articulate the content of artwork, including their own work, and to engage in critical dialogue and thoughtful discourse.

In its major, the Department seeks to enable students to move freely among artistic disciplines. Through a curriculum that encourages students to create and respond to various art forms, students will be prepared for further academic or professional studies in the arts and related fields or to pursue a career as an artist (where apprenticeship and training are available in the field). Faculty, both individually and as a whole, actively advise and help shape students’ development.

The following are potential concentrations a major or minor could follow with creative arts faculty advisement: arts administration, arts therapy, liturgical arts, digital art, digital and graphic design, interior design, painting and drawing, acting, directing, musical theater, theater design and technology, theater management and producing, conducting, vocal performance, music studies, vocal performance.
