This minor provides students with academic and field experiences that focus on working with the poor and marginalized in society. This minor is open to students of any major. Through this minor:
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the issues surrounding poverty and marginalization in contemporary society, including economic, social and political causes.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the key teaching of the Franciscan Tradition, Catholic Social Teaching, and the Social Sciences on how to address the issues of poverty and marginalization through direct service and through advocacy.
- Students will be able to apply their knowledge in a field experience that focuses on direct service with or advocacy for the poor, disadvantaged, or marginalized people in our community.
- Students will be able to evaluate their direct service or advocacy through written reflection on its connection with their academic study.
- Students will be encouraged to become advocates of the poor and the marginalized after completing their education.
Students intending to pursue a minor in Franciscan Service and Advocacy should declare their intention to the Director of the Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy and the Dean of their school (Liberal Arts, Business, Science).
