PHYS - 130. General Physics IThree hours of lecture and one three-hour laboratory period a week for one semester. 4 credit(s) The general physics sequence provides an introduction to those basic concepts of physics that form the foundation of all the natural sciences. The first course is mainly an introduction to classical mechanics where the fundamental laws of Newtonian mechanics are applied to a variety of simple systems. Some elementary thermodynamics is also included. Throughout the course, the conservation laws serve as unifying physical principles. Mathematics, a powerful tool in the understanding of natural phenomena, assumes its essential role. Computers are used in the laboratories. Lab fee.
