CHEM - 305. Intermediate Topics in Organic Chemistry 1-3 credit(s) This lecture course will build on the material covered in CHEM 210 /CHEM 220 , and will cover in more detail the structural and physical properties of organic molecules and the reactions they undergo. The structure and physical properties of complex organic molecules will be covered, including sources of strain energy and steric hindrance and their effects on chemical reactivity. The properties of various chemical reaction intermediates, such as carbocations, radicals, carbanions and carbenes will be discussed, as will their involvement in chemical reaction mechanisms. More detailed descriptions of the mechanisms of the reactions covered in CHEM 210 /CHEM 220 will be presented, as will the class of pericyclic reactions and the Woodward-Hoffmann rules that govern them (not covered in CHEM 210 /CHEM 220 ). This enhanced vocabulary of organic reactions will then be used to learn the planning of the synthesis of organic molecules.
Prerequisite(s): CHEM 220 . Attribute: (ATTR: ARTS).
