Our Visual Art & Design program invites students to exercise imaginative thinking, engage in critical discourse, and learn the technical skills needed to support their passion for the arts. The major is built on a strong foundation in the practices of traditional and new media, a deep understanding of the cultural impact of art throughout time, and the belief that imaginative thinking and personal expression can enrich our ways of seeing and communicating. Majors demonstrate a breadth of competencies and a depth of critical thinking through their final portfolio and website. Students will be prepared to pursue a career as an artist, designer, entrepreneur, or other creative professional and/or further academic pursuits in the field of art and design.
The structure of the major begins with introductory courses in 2-D design, drawing, and digital photography. Further development of visual literacy and exposure to a diverse range of artists and art practices is supported by art history and upper level studio courses. Our upper-class majors focus on professional development, portfolio development, and the acquisition of advanced technical, conceptual, and perceptual skills. The Foy Hall Gallery and Yates Gallery provide students with on-campus opportunities to exhibit work, curate shows, and work directly with professional artists. The college’s proximity to major art institutions like Mass MOCA and Storm King as well as gallery nights Albany, Troy, and Hudson enhance students’ experience.
Our faculty actively advise and mentor students from the moment they enter the program. Regardless of your goals, the Visual Art & Design program encourages you to develop a creative voice. Please tour our website, meet our faculty, and view our facilities.
