Requirements for the Major, B.A. in History with Certificate in Social Studies Teaching (39 credits):


History majors seeking initial teaching certification in grades 7-12 will need to maintain at least a 3.1 in History as well as an overall GPA of 2.9.

Students must earn 3 credits from the following courses: 3 credits


Students must earn 3 credits from the following courses: 3 credits


Students must earn 3 credits from the following New York History courses: 3 credits


Students must earn 6 credits in each of the following areas from course at the 200-level or above: 18 credits


  • American History (HAM) 6 credit(s)

Students are advised to experience the breadth of American History by taking one course in Early American History (1596-1900) and one course covering the twentieth century.

  • Non-Western History (HNW) 6 credit(s)

Students are advised to experience the breadth of Non-Western History by taking one course in Premodern Non-Western History (defined as pre-1700) and one course in Modern Non-Western History (defined as 1700-Present).

  • European History (HEUR) 6 credit(s)

Students are advised to experience the breadth of European History by taking one course in Early Europe (defined as pre-1800) and one course in the Modern Era (defined as 1800-Present).

History Electives (HIST 300 - 495): 3 credit(s)


Students must earn 9 credits from the following History Methods courses: 9 credits


Students must earn 3 credits from each of the following areas: 6 credits


  • Economics 3 credit(s)
  • Sociology 3 credit(s)

Two semesters in the same foreign language 6 credits


American Sign Language does not fulfill this requirement.
