  • 3 credit(s)
  •

FYSM 100 and FYSM 101: The two semester course sequence is for all first-year students; there are sections of each class for transfer students who enter Siena with fewer than 24 credits earned while matriculated at another college or university. The Franciscan concerns covered during the first semester are Heritage and the Natural World; Franciscan concerns covered during  the second semester are Diversity and Social Justice. For each semester, there are some interdisciplinary readings common to all sections of the course. Individual faculty choose the remaining readings and an overall theme to bring coherence to their sections. The lives and stories of St. Francis and St. Clare are interwoven throughout the year. As a seminar based on the learning community model, students remain with the same faculty member and classmates for both semesters.

FYSM 200: This condensed First Year at Siena Seminar is for transfer students admitted to Siena with 24 or more credits earned while matriculated at another college or university. The one semester course covers all four Franciscan concerns and all required course readings. The goals of the course are to introduce transfer students to the story that is unique to Siena University and our Franciscan heritage and to reinforce critical thinking, reading, and communication skills vital to life-long learning.
