CIP Code: 14.1201

HEGIS Code: 1902

The Applied Physics major offers broad foundational training in physics as well as more specific courses that focus on the application of physics to engineering. The liberal arts and Franciscan components of the curriculum further develop students’ critical thinking and communication skills. Upon completion of this program, students are prepared to pursue graduate work in engineering or physics, or transition directly to the workforce.

The Applied Physics major offers two tracks that focus on how physics applies to mechanical or electrical engineering. Both tracks require a common set of core physics and math courses, but they differ in the emphasis of the engineering courses. The mechanical track is also suitable for students who are interested in mechanical, civil, aerospace, and biomechanical engineering. The electrical track provides a solid foundation in analog and digital circuit analysis and design as well as the underlying theories of electricity and magnetism for students who are interested in a career in electrical engineering. Both tracks are suitable for physics graduates entering the workforce directly. Graduates of the proposed engineering physics program will have more extensive technical training than physics graduates, and this will improve their employment opportunities.

Requirements for the Electrical Track (10 credits):
