Meet the History Faculty
The Department of History introduces students to the richness, complexity and diversity of the human past. The study of history stimulates intellectual curiosity and demands careful scholarship and reasoned argument. At Siena, history majors gain purposeful, mission-driven hands-on experience that equips them with skills valued by employers and graduate programs. History majors craft research questions, judge sources, contextualize accounts, analyze data, synthesize scholarship, and effectively communicate findings. The intellectual and technical skills of Siena history graduates prepare them for graduate work and careers in business, government, law, higher education, nonprofits, journalism, NGOs, public history, secondary education, and administration. To accomplish these purposes, students are offered a wide variety of courses as well as specialized colloquia, honors seminars, and independent study. In addition, each history major is required to complete three credit hours of coursework with the attribute EXPH (Experiential History). This “hands-on history” requirement might mean intensive archival research, interviewing oral history subjects, teaching a class, interning at a historic site, delivering original scholarship at a conference, exploring history on international trips, or digitizing documents.
History Honors Program: Students with high academic achievement, regardless of their major, are invited to participate in Honors seminars. Students who maintain a cumulative index of 3.3 and complete a minimum of four Honors seminars with a B+ average will be eligible for a certificate of Honors in History upon graduation. Admission to the seminars is by permission of the instructor.
High school students who score 4 or better on Advanced Placement tests in AP World History, AP Modern European History, or AP American History shall receive 3 general history credits. These credits will appear on the student’s transcript as HIST 1EL. Advanced Placement tests shall not fulfill the core disciplinary requirement in History of a CDH.
