Revolutionary Era Studies

Siena College’s McCormick Center for the Study of the American Revolution is a community engaged teaching and learning program rooted in the traditions of liberal learning, service and advocacy. We partner with nonprofits and the public sector to develop and share educational programming about the history of New York State and colonial and Revolutionary America. Our educational practices are student-centered and civic minded. We provide Siena students with personally meaningful leadership and learning opportunities that advance history education and prepare them for life, work and active citizenship.

McCormick Center programming foster greater appreciation, interest, and awareness of the events and ideals behind the struggle for American independence. Of special interest is exploration and understanding the Revolutionary Era in upstate New York. The Certificate in Revolutionary Era Studies is open to any student interested in the history of the American Revolution. The certificate program integrates multidisciplinary study of early American history with service learning and public history opportunities thorough a variety of coursework and a required internship relevant to the study of the American Revolution. In order to achieve the certificate and do the required internship, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be maintained in courses for certificate credit. Students must also complete the requirements of their major field.

Students pursuing the certificate should consult the program director each semester to assure proper course selection and identify an appropriate internship site. With preapproval from the program director, CRES students may apply up to 6-credits of relevant coursework completed through the CIC Consortium for Online Humanities instruction the Certificate in Revolutionary Era Studies.

Certificate students are also eligible to participate in the National Institute of American History and Democracy’s Collegiate Program in Early American History, Material Culture, and Museum Studies . Students will study at the College of William and Mary in Williamburg, Virginia and have the option to complete an internship with the Colonial Williamsbug Foundation. Participating students may apply up to 9-credits completed at the College of William and Mary toward the Certificate. Please meet with the program director to learn more about these opportunities.
