HIST - 292. History of Early Modern Japan 3 credit(s) This course will introduce students to the history of Japan between 1600 and 1868. Understanding the history of Early Modern Japan builds on the foundation needed for a richer appreciation of the history of Modern Japan. Students are encouraged-but not required-to take this course between HIST-291: Traditional Japan and HIST-293: Modern Japan. Readings and discussions will focus on politics, culture, religion, and social life during the Edo period. All readings in English. No prior knowledge of Japan necessary. Course requirements include class participation, midterm and final exams, and brief analysis essays. This course will be offered every other year.
