HIST - 284. History of Traditional China

History of China until 1840, with particular attention given to the rise and fall of Imperial China, intellectual and religious traditions, cultural developments, as well as encounters with borderlands, East Asia, and the world. Traditional China lays the foundation needed for a richer understanding and appreciation of Modern China. Students are encouraged (though not required) to enroll in courses sequentially. All readings in English. No prior knowledge of China necessary. Course requirements include class participation, midterm and final exams, and brief papers. This course will be offered once every three years.

Prerequisite(s): HIST 101  or HIST 102  or HIST 103  or HIST 104  or HIST 105  or HIST 190
