FREN - 025. Francophone Literature in Translation 3 credit(s) This course is designed to introduce students to major French-speaking authors from various French-speaking areas. Students will examine texts from France, the Caribbean (Martinique, Guadeloupe, Haiti), the Maghreb (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) and Sub-Saharan Africa (Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroun, Senegal, Republic of Congo). A strong emphasis will be placed on the following themes: literary texts as historical documents, the status of women, tradition vs. modernity, integration and exclusion, the importance of religion, the question of national identity, the complex legacies of colonialism. The course material includes literary excerpts, short stories, and novels in translation. This course is taught in English. No knowledge of French language is required.
