HIST - 276. Sports in American History 3 credit(s) Whether it be horse racing, bare-knuckle fighting, baseball or football, (to name just a few) sports have played an important role in American life. This course will explore the role of sports in American culture as well as cultural effects on American sports from the colonial era to the twentieth century. Particular focus will be on how sports illuminate issues of race, class, ethnicity, and gender in American history. Student assessment will be based on completion of assigned readings, discussion, examinations, reflection essays, and a research paper.
