APHY - 160. Materials Science 3 credit(s) This is an introductory course to the scientific principles that govern the structure and properties of materials, including metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers. Emphasis is placed on how the underlying bonding and atomic structure determine the physical properties of the material (mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical) at multiple length scales, from atomic packing to micron scale. The course reviews practical applications to engineering materials and aspects of modern nanomaterials, from the viewpoint of thermodynamics and physical kinetics.
Prerequisite(s): CHEM 110 . Attribute: (ATTR: ARTS, PYEL).
