The major themes of Earth Science are (1) the geographic location and global distribution of natural earth phenomena, (2) the origin and interpretation of these phenomena within the framework of a hierarchy of interacting physical systems and mechanisms, and (3) the impact of past and present human activities on the natural balance of these systems and mechanisms. Topics include climate and weather; atmospheric, surface, and subsurface water; soils and soil processes; natural vegetation; landforms; and diastrophic, fluvial and erosional processes.
