HIST - 210. History of Medicine 3 credit(s) This course will explore the changing intellectual, economic, institutional and cultural relationships that have characterized medicine in world history from antiquity to the present. We will consider the education of practitioners, the locations of healing, the availability of treatment, and the expectations that people had of medicine as ideas about the body and illness shifted radically with new discoveries and theories about health and disease. We will study the evolution of public health and examine the social responses to epidemic disease. Students will learn about the role of general social and cultural trends (industrialization, technology) in shaping medical practice and the medical professions.
