EDUC - 531. Infant, Toddler and Preschool Education & Guidance

This course focuses on the planning and implementing of developmentally appropriate curriculum and instructional practices, informed by knowledge of child development, individual differences, program models, and state and national standards. Emphasis will be on models of infant/toddler/preschool education that advocate learning through play, inquiry, cooperation, and creative expression, and that address the needs of children with the full range of abilities and cultural backgrounds. Curricular areas include language and emergent literacy, math, science, social studies, art, music, drama, movement, health, safety, and nutrition. Service learning will be explored. Adult relationships in the care-giving setting, collaborative planning models, and home-school-community relationships will be addressed within the context of appropriate planning. Methods for evaluating children’s progress, curricular goals and objectives, and program effectiveness will be addressed. (20 hours of fieldwork is required.)
