HIST - 371. Law and Justice in Pre-Modern Europe

This course explores the interaction between the development of law and social change in medieval and early modern Europe. This course will cover the influence of Roman and common law, the growth of state authority, the development of legal processes and professional judiciaries. We will trace the emergence and transformation of legal institutions from the early Middle Ages through the eighteenth century. We will also examine how these issues are related to larger social changes in medieval and early modern society. Through a study of primary and secondary source material we will examine the development of law codes, the function of courts, the nature of crime, the transformation of prosecution and trial.

Prerequisite(s): Any HIST 100-level course.
