HIST - 411. Slavery and Freedom in Historical Perspective 3 credit(s) This course provides a broad historical study of slavery and emancipation in the New World from the late 15th century to the early 20th century. It focuses on the origins of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and early modern slave systems in the Americas. Students will understand how these slave systems shaped the economies, cultures, and governments of Western Europe, West Africa, and the Americas. Students will also consider the social history of enslaved people, their resistance to slavery, the process of abolition, and the legacy of slavery for the present. Additional topics covered will vary with the expertise of the instructor.
