STAT - 272. Introduction to Sports Analytics

3 credit(s)

In sports, how likely are extreme performances, e.g., Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game, or pitching a 'no-no'? Do roster decisions actually impact whether a team wins or loses? What decisions by a coach or general manager will actually lead to more wins by a franchise? In STATS 272, we aim to inform on how sports analytics can be used to inform on these issues. Specifically, this course introduces students to the statistical and quantitative methods used in sports analytics to help them develop and apply analytical skills useful for evaluating athletes, teams, and sports franchises.  Lab fee.

Prerequisite(s): STAT 175  or STAT 275 . (Note:  Permission of Instructor may be granted for ATDV 110 or BAAS 200 if students enrolled in the versions of these courses that use/introduce R. Introductory statistics concepts and experience with R are essential for understanding the statistical and quantitative methods utilized in STAT 272 - Introduction to Sports Analytics.)
