POSC - 385. Politics of Clothing

3 credit(s)

From free speech to cultural and religious protections, dress codes in school, work, and the criminal justice system, to political protests and political branding, to debates about sustainability (textile production is the world's second largest source of pollution), clothing can mean many things. This course takes a law, culture, sustainability, and humanities approach to what clothing signifies in political spaces. We will discuss free speech and discrimination cases, ways to accommodate or regulate religious and gendered clothing in the public sphere, clothing as protest, and fair trade and sweatshop-free fashion and sustainability or green movements.
