3 credit(s)

This course explores the roles of languages and literacies in shaping identities, interactions, and communities. Students identify the social, cultural, and cognitive foundations of language development and disciplinary literacy for adolescent learners. Students critically examine a wide variety of texts, pedagogies, curricula, and systemic structures present in schools and society in order to develop a complex understanding of literacy. The course will contribute to students' understanding of classroom instruction for diverse learners, English language learners, and speakers of English variants. Students analyze their own literacy histories, language backgrounds, and voices in order to write, educate, and communicate. At least one course assignment will require observation and/or participation in a school setting, in order to apply course concepts in authentic contexts.
